Alice encounters the cat in the story

From Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll (1865)

Alice had been wandering through the forest for some time when, to her great surprise, she saw a cat sitting on a branch of a tree. The cat was grinning broadly, as if it had some secret knowledge.

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" Alice asked.

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.

"I don't much care where—" said Alice.

"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.

"So long as I get somewhere."

"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."

Alice felt that this was not the best advice, but she decided to try it anyway. She took a few steps along the path and then looked around to find the Cat had disappeared, leaving only a broad grin behind.
